Lucia has fallen in love with Edgardo, whose family is the enemy of Lucia's family. Her brother wants her to marry someone who's better for their family... so he tells her Edgardo has been faithless. She gives in and marries the Other Guy... and Edgardo shows up, accusing her of faithlessness... anyway, this song is part of what's known as the Mad Scene, which happens after she kills her new husband, before she dies of grief. I sang it a long time ago when I lived in Manhattan, back when I was really going to be an opera singer. (Translation by Ilya Speranza)
